HOD Confusion

I am confused on page 113 when Marlow and company encounter the fog whole on their journey along the river. The descriptions make the whole scene a little unclear to me. I know that there was some sort of a "loud cry, as of infinite desolation" that they heard, but other than that I didn't really understand what was going on. The text then went on to talk about being attacked, which lead to my further misunderstanding.

  1. I think the "loud cry" and the "infinite desolation" are sounds of the air of the people who were "chained" in those chains. I might be wrong, but that's what I think.

  2. Yes, I agree with Alberto. It is referencing the people who are natives in the jungle on the bank of the river. The fog covers them but the scream is once they have seen the boat. They understand that it is the English and are angered by their invasion of their terrotiry/home. They natives then proceed to attack the boat. The fog acts as a cover that makes the unknown that much greater and in essence blinds the men in more than one way.

  3. The fact that they are covered with fog is foreboding the attack. Also they were left a warning with the wood. They are being attacked and the I think that the loud cry is from the people that are about to attack them from the riverbank.
