Since my last post about senior project, I have gone in a completely different direction. Instead of creating an app for a smart phone I have decided to choreograph a dance. The dance will be in a modern style, most likely contemporary, although I have not completely decided. Once finished I will teach my routine to a group of dancers, clean up the choreography, and record the group dancing the piece. The changing of my project necessitated a new topic for my research paper as well. The paper will focus on the ways in which modern dance has taken shape and evolved from classical styles. I will include details about ballet as well as different styles such as modern and lyrical.
I have found a mentor who will critique my choreography and help me make it the absolute best it can be. Throughout the process my mentor will help me make alterations to my routine so that the phrases flow smoothly and the movement matches the music. I have also found a few dancers who are eager to learn it, and I am seeking more. I will utilize them throughout the process of composing the dance so that I can play to the strengths of not only myself but of those who will dance the piece.
I am in the process of narrowing down song choices. I will know the perfect song when I hear it; unfortunately it hasn’t found me yet. Deciding upon a track will enable me to envision what I want the dance to be and help me determine the style. Until then I am working out phrases so that I have plenty of ideas when I find the right song.
